VSS Entertainment - How to Be Authentically Irish on Saint Patrick's Day

Blog by VSS Entertainment

Guest Post by

March 17th is fast approaching. A day when a sea of green can be found in many pubs around the world, when Guinness and Irish Cream are the drinks of choice, and thousands of people line the streets to watch a parade and celebrate the Patron Saint of Ireland. In order to properly celebrate the Saint and his achievements in Ireland, one must first know a little bit of history about Saint Patrick and how Saint Patrick's Day is celebrated around the world.

Saint Patrick's real name was not Patrick and he was not from Ireland. Maewyn Succate, as his real name is believed to be, was actually born in a village called Bannavem Taberniae that is believed to have been on the south-western shore of Great Britain. As a teenager he was captured and forced into slavery, but eventually escaped. He became a Bishop in 432. St. Patrick succeeded in converting Ireland from Paganism to Christianity by speaking Irish Gaelic, understanding Pagan rituals and relating them to Christian beliefs. Two of the greatest myths about him are that he used the pagan symbol of the Shamrock to explain the Christian belief of the Holy Trinity, and that he drove all the snakes from Ireland. There is no evidence in his writings to support the shamrock story and scientists are sure that there never were any snakes in Ireland. The snake myth was likely due to symbolism, as serpents were associated with the Pagans.

Saint Patrick died March 17th, 461 at the age of 76. Before his death, he asked that his body be put on a cart drawn by two oxen and wherever they stopped was where he should be buried. His wishes were followed and his remains were buried where the oxen stopped, on Cathedral Hill in Downpatrick County Down, North Ireland.

The day of his death, March 17, became the day to celebrate the Saint in Ireland and across the globe. As people emigrated from Ireland, they took the celebration with them. Over 70 million people worldwide claim some Irish ancestry. A large group of these people live in Canada, the US, Australia and New Zealand. Whether claiming to have Irish ancestry, or just wanting to take part in the festivities, here are a few things to do this March 17th to be Authentically Irish.

Originally a religious holiday, Saint Patrick's Day became a public holiday in 1903. It remains a religious day of observance in Ireland for the Church of Ireland and the Roman Catholic Church. The first Saint Patrick's Day parade that was held in the Irish Free State was in Dublin in 1931. By the 1990's the Irish government began to use the day to promote Ireland and its culture. Most Irish cities have a parade with the biggest held in Dublin followed by the second biggest in Downpatrick where Saint Patrick is believed to be buried. Great Britain celebrates the day with parades and festivals as well. Birmingham holds the largest parade in Britain. It is the third largest in the world after Dublin and New York. London, Manchester, and Liverpool also hold large celebrations. The Queen Mother used to present sprigs of shamrock flown in from Ireland to the Irish Guards. They still wear them to this day. Saint Patrick's Day has become an unofficial holiday in Canada and the US. In Canada, the largest parade is held in Montreal. They have occurred there every year since 1824, but people have been celebrating the Saint there since 1759. Many other provinces also hold Saint Patrick's Day parades and festivals. The first parade in New York City occurred in 1762. With few exceptions, the parade has been held there every year since 1766. The New York Parade is the largest in the world. Take part in the celebrations, whatever the location!

Canada is known for its hockey. From 1919-27 the Toronto Maple Leafs were known as the Toronto St. Patrick's and they wore green jerseys. In 1999 the Leafs had a game on Match 17th and wore green retro jerseys. The Toronto Blue Jays and Toronto Raptors also don green uniforms for Saint Patrick's Day.

Referred to as the Emerald Isle, Ireland is known for its green scenery and the color green has become associated with the country. Many people outside of Ireland will be wearing green on Saint Patrick's Day.

Everything from green shirts and hats to novelty hats, necklaces, glasses, and more. Some only wear green in fear of being pinched if they don't! There are some cities that even paint their streets or dye their rivers green.

As early as the 17th century, people wore green ribbons and shamrocks in celebration of St Patrick's Day.

However, the only green worn in Ireland on March 17th is a sprig of shamrock on their lapel. The color green is connected to the old flag and a time when Ireland was not free. Some people also believed that it was unlucky to wear green as it was the color of the "Good People", another name for fairies. Anyone who wore too much green, especially children, would be taken away. Despite the popularity of the color green, the color associated with Saint Patrick is actually blue.

To dress for the occasion, Guinness shirts, bottle opener hats, accessories, and barware items are available to gear up for Saint Patrick's Day. Consider traditional Irish tartan scarves, sashes, or kilts. If looking for a cheaper version, try a green instakilt. Irish jewellery is also a great expression of authenticity. Irish pendants, rings, bracelets, earrings, and more can add an Irish touch. Choose the Irish Claddagh symbol of love, loyalty and friendship or maybe something with Celtic knotwork. There are also History of Ireland rings which feature various symbols representing different phases in Irish history. Celtic Crosses are another symbol associated with Saint Patrick, as he is said to have combined the sun symbol of the druids with the cross of the Christians forming the Celtic Cross.

Saint Patrick's Day has become a time to party, sing, and dance. The Irish are known for their love of music. Many great musical acts have come from Ireland: Thin Lizzy, the Cranberries, U2, Van Morrison, Sinead O'Connor, and the Corrs, to name a few. Several pubs bring in Traditional Irish musicians to perform traditional and classic tunes like "When Irish Eyes are Smiling", "Danny Boy", "Whisky in the Jar", "My Wild Irish Rose" and more. Doing an Irish Jig or performing a Riverdance impression are acceptable moves! Of course the best places to sing and dance on this day are in an authentic Irish Pub. If planning a St Patrick's Party at home instead of heading out to a pub, there are many Irish CDs available to enhance the home atmosphere.

Along with the singing and dancing often comes drinking. Since it was originally a religious holiday, pubs were required to be closed for the day. This was changed in the 1970s. Some of the most popular drinks for Saint Patrick's Day are Guinness, Kilkenny and Bailey's. All Guinness sold in the UK, Ireland, and North America is brewed at St. James Gate in Dublin. Over 10 million glasses of Guinness are enjoyed everyday and is sold in 150 countries around the world. In 2006, more Guinness was sold in Canada than in Ireland on St Patrick's Day. There are several different brands of Irish Cream, the most popular being Bailey's. It was introduced in 1974 and was the first Irish Cream on the market.

Consider some traditional Irish food. Start the day out with traditional Irish Breakfast consisting of fried bacon, egg, sausage, black and white pudding, fried tomato and fried potato farls. For those who have not yet tried it, black pudding is blood pudding. White pudding is pork fat, suet bread, and oatmeal formed into the shape of a sausage. Wash it all down with a nice cup of Irish tea. The most popular brands are Barry's, Lyons', and Bewley's. Of course, the potato is the basis for many Irish dishes. Introduced in the mid 16th century, it became the main food group of the poor. As a great source of vitamins and minerals, it managed to keep basic nutrition in a time when other crops were not available. Extreme cold and potato blight caused some of the Great Irish Famines that wiped out a million people and forced millions of others to leave the country. Some of the most popular Irish potato dishes are Colcannon, Champ and Boxty. Colcannon is mashed potatoes with garlic mixed with cabbage or kale. Champ is mashed potatoes mixed with spring onions or scallions. Boxty mixes finely grated raw potatoes with mashed potatoes, then adds flour, baking soda, buttermilk and egg and fries it on a griddle like a pancake. One of the most popular Irish dishes is Bacon and Cabbage. There was a time when many Irish immigrants couldn't afford back bacon, so they used corned beef as a substitute. Corned Beef and Cabbage is now a common dish. Seafood is also a popular Irish dish. Salmon and Cod are the most common fish, but prawns and oysters are also popular. Try a Dublin Lawyer- lobster cooked in whisky and cream. Livestock was also important to the Irish. Irish stew features lamb or mutton mixed with root vegetables. Coddle is a similar dish with pork sausages boiled in stock with potatoes and onions. If you're a little more adventurous, maybe you'd be interested in Crubeens or Drisheen. Crubeens are salted pigs feet boiled and served with cabbage. Drisheen is cow/sheep/pig's blood mixed with milk, salt, fat, and breadcrumbs. They are boiled and cooked in an intestine. Follow them up with soda bread, wheaten bread, soda farls, coffee cake, or scones. Enjoy!

In order to be really authentically Irish, one should need to know at least a few Irish phrases. Although saying things like "Top of the Morning" and "Kiss me I'm Irish" will work, it would be more impressive to say Irish phrases in Irish Gaelic. Although pronunciation is different for different parts of Ireland, these phrases will work in the local pub. The first phrase to know is Happy Saint Patrick's Day! In Irish, this phrase is La fheile Padraig sona duit" (pronounced law ae-leh paw-rig so-nuh dwitch). In the pub, order a pint of Guinness by saying Pionta Guinness, le do thoil (pronounced pyunta Guinness leh duh hull), or for whisky drinkers, try "uisce beatha" (pronounced ish-ka ba-ha). Be sure to know how to say Cheers in Irish Gaelic, "Slainte" (pronounced slaan-cheh)!

So this March 17th, have an Irish Breakfast, wear a green Guinness shirt, check out the local Saint Patrick's Day parade, have an Irish lunch, hop onto a cart drawn by oxen and go to whatever pub they stop at (or just hop in a cab and go to an Irish pub), listen to some Irish music, have some Irish drinks, and most importantly have a great time celebrating the Patron Saint of Ireland. Happy Saint Patrick's Day! Slainte!

VSS Entertainment - NCAA Tournament Time!

By VSS Entertainment

Did your favorite college basketball team make it into the 68-team for the upcoming NCAA Men’s College Basketball Tournament?

We watched the CBS Selection Show (really? Do we need two hours of hype and talk before we announce the teams?) and, while we were disappointed with some of the teams that made it to the field (i.e., Syracuse) and hoped San Diego State would have been picked, we’ll settle for what we get and move on to making our predictions; filling out our brackets and entering into a few free online contests.

The teams earning No. 1 seeds include: Kansas, North Carolina, Virginia and Oregon.

Two “feed-in” games take place in Dayton, Ohio starting Wednesday night with No. 16 Florida Gulf Coast University (20-16) taking on No. 16 Fairleigh Davidson (18-14) at 6:40 p.m. EST followed by No. 11 Vanderbilt (19-13) meeting No. 11 Wichita State (24-8) at approximately 9:10 p.m. Both games will be televised on trutv.

Then, on Wednesday night, two more “feed-in” contests are also set to take place in Dayton with No. 16 Holy Cross (14-19) facing No. 16 Southern University (22-12) at 6:40 p.m., followed by No. 11 Michigan (22-12) taking on No. 11 Tulsa (20-11) at approximately 9:10 p.m. Both games will be televised on truetv.

The real action gets under way on Thursday, March 17 (St. Patrick’s Day) at 12:15 p.m. with No. 4 Duke kicking off a full-day of basketball action against UNC-Wilmington.

Top-seeded Kansas meets No. 16 Austin Peay at 4 p.m. (TNT), while No. 1 Virginia takes on No. 16 Hampton at 3:10 p.m. (trutv) and No. 1 North Carolina faces the Florida Gulf Coast-Fairleigh Davidson winner at 7:20 p.m. (TBS).

On Friday, March 18, another big day of NCAA basketball starts at 12:15 p.m. with seventh-seeded Dayton taking on No. 10 Syracuse (CBS).

Top-seeded Oregon meets the Holy Cross-Southern winner on Friday, March 18 at 7:27 p.m. (trutv).

Good luck with all your picks!

VSS Entertainment - Easter Time Egg Hunt Games For Children

By VSS Entertainment

Easter time is on the way!  Consider these tips for getting your pastels on. These  nifty and simple suggestions can help make your children's Easter time fun and  special. Ask children the things they love most about Easter time and you are prone to  get 1 of 2 responses:  "the chocolate" or "the hunt for eggs on Easter Sunday".

Easter Time Egg Treasure Search: You can reach an entirely different degree of  excitement and fun towards the standard Easter time egg search by developing  a unique "rabbit trail" of clues which will guide your son or daughter to one egg  after another.  As bait and to keep them going, use a generous basket of Easter  trinkets at the end of the hunt as the ultimate prize in the final hiding spot.

Start the hunt with crafty personalized letters addressed to each child and  signed by the Easter Bunny.  The letter should have a slight clue to get them  going.  For example:

"Happy Easter Day, Little One!  The sun is shining but my last night rounds were  super exciting.  I hopped, hopped, hopped around and dropped a few eggs  which I need help finding.  If you find them all, who knows what treats there will  also be!  Grab your Easter basket, get ready to run, and look for clues to find  your fun!  What do you need to be able to run?  Something that might go on your  FEET?  Oh, maybe that's the ticket to STEP towards your next treat!

Enjoy your day and your hunt!  Hugs and Kisses from The Big Bunny"

You can then put an egg in a shoe or a rain boot that is perhaps hidden behind  the porch steps  (which would be the best answer to the first clue in the letter).  From  here, keep hiding eggs and writing more clues that go with the hiding place and  make a funny trail.  When you get to the end of your hunt, make certain that the  last hiding space is big enough to truly hide the giant Basket.   If you want to do  this game as part of an Easter picnic or party, you could leave a sneaky trail of chocolate  bunnies instead of Easter Eggs.

If you want some assistance with writing your trail of clues, you can easily find  terrific treasure search game firms online that can offer play-ready printable  search games. These print outs are ideal for an Easter hunt where most of the  egg clues would be found inside of typical areas of the home, kitchen, or yard.

Easter Time Word Scramble: A variation on an egg hunt would be to have a  secret message hidden inside plastic Easter eggs which must be unscrambled  before running to the next clue.  To start this game, again write the children  personalized letters from the Easter Bunny that has instructions for the game.   For example:

"It's A Special Easter Game for You, Little One!  It was such a busy night hop,  hop, hopping about, hiding all those eggs which must be found quickly. Unscramble  some words you will find in your eggs in order to take you to the next place.  If  you do this right, you might find a super special Easter treat in the very last  space!  Good luck!  Hugs and kisses from the Big Bunny"

Come up with the first clue word, write it on colored paper and cut up the letters  into individual squares that will give them something to unscramble.  Make the  letters large enough so that they won't be easily lost, but will still fit inside of the  plastic egg.  You may wish to use one color of paper for one word and a different  color paper for the second word if you have two word location clues like  "BATHROOM SHOWER".  Place the next egg there with a new clue to next  location.  Again make sure that the final hiding place with the Easter Basket is  large enough that they won't see their surprise until they have worked through  the word clue game all the way to the end.  The eggs may then be put at  random at home just like any regular egg search.

It always possible to take any traditional Easter game and make it special for  your own family.  Take lots of selfies with your kids such that they will remember the fun for many years from now. Happy Easter Egg hunting to everyone!

VSS Entertainment - Planning An 'Over The Hill' Party

Anytime anyone has a birthday party end in a “0” – 30, 40, 50 and so on – it makes for a great excuse to have a birthday party.

Some consider 30 to be “over the hill” but it’s probably up to the spouse or host of the party. Generally, we see more “over the hill” parties at 40 and 50, but not too many at 30. That’s still pretty young!

The most important thing about planning and hosting an “over the hill” party is to make sure the birthday boy or girl is good humored and will take the event in stride. You absolutely don’t want to ruin their day and have the birthday guest of honor in tears on their birthday! We’ve seen this happen before!

With all that in mind, here are some tips on hosting an “over the hill” birthday party:

- Decide if this is going to be a surprise birthday party or not. Some people don’t like surprises, but you could plan the party and not let the birthday guy or gal know that the REAL surprise is that it’s an “over the hill” party!

- Pick and plan your location. If you’re looking to host it at a recreation hall; church; restaurant, etc., plan early and reserve your date! If your party is going to be outdoors, have an alternate plan in case of bad weather.

- Make a guest list and get the invitations out as soon as you have the date and location selected. People (especially those with family members) are extremely busy these days, so make sure you get this event on their calendar early! Also, keep your birthday location in mind when inviting guests. If the location is ideal for 50 people, don’t invite 150!

- Have the food catered. This will have you a ton of time.

- Get all black decorations; balloons; plate; cups, etc.

- Plan and order your cake early. Will you order a black cake? Or one in the same of a tombstone, perhaps?

- Will you have entertainment at the party such as a DJ or play some of the guests favorite music via a CD player?

Above all, plan early; get organized and have fun!

VSS Entertainment - What Exactly Is March Madness?

By

Even if you're not a college basketball fan, odds are you have heard the term, "March Madness." Each year beginning in the month of March, for four weeks the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) holds Men's and Women's Basketball Tournaments to determine the national champions of college basketball, and these tournaments are nicknamed, "March Madness."

The NCAA tournament officially begins with the announcement of the bracket, which is the rankings and first game match-ups of the teams who have earned the chance to play in the tournament. The bracket also introduces which teams will play in which locations throughout the country for their tournament games.

These brackets become a national basketball fan obsession, with people entering contests trying to guess the outcome of each game in the bracket, ending with the overall national champion and a tiebreaker score prediction.

Many businesses, websites and groups of friends host contests where people can either enter for free or for a fee to compete against their friends or complete strangers to see who can score the most points with their bracket predictions. Prizes for winning these contests range anywhere from bragging rights to cash or merchandise.

The NCAA tournament is notorious for big upsets. Because teams in this tournament are paired against teams from different conferences who they would not normally play against, the outcome of any given game can be very unpredictable. The way the teams are paired up in the first round tends to favor the higher-rated teams, for example a number-one rated teams plays against a number-sixteen rated team, however upsets are not uncommon in the first and second rounds of the tournament. This makes for match-ups that are both fun and difficult to predict, and is part of the reason the tournament is nicknamed, "March Madness."

Getting Invited to the Party

Thirty-one NCAA men's basketball teams get automatic invites to play in the NCAA tournament because they won their respective conference. Another 37 teams are chosen through a selection committee based on their conference record, road record, ranking in national polls, wins versus ranked opponents, and RPI (rating percentage index).

This selection committee also decides what ranking each team will get, called a seed, and which of the four regions each team will be placed in. Each region contains between 16 and 18 teams, with the top-ranked team in each region getting a number-one seed. A lower seed who manages to advance far in the tournament is termed a "Cinderella" team.

Recent years have added four extra teams to the original 64 teams who used to comprise the tournament. These four extras play off in and opening round to earn the chance to officially play in the tournament. After the 64 tournament teams are officially decided, the real tournament begins.

The Tourney

The NCAA tournament usually begins the third Thursday in March with an intense full two days of games that pares the field of 64 teams down to 32. The next two days games are played that pares the field down again to just 16 teams, often referred to as the "Sweet 16." Games resume the following Thursday, the second week of the tournament, where the field is then pared down to the Final Four teams. The following, third, week of the tournament features the four teams left racing for the National Championship. Even though the Final Four games are played the first Saturday in April, they are still a big part of March Madness. The National Championship game is then played the following Monday.

VSS Entertainment - Making Even More Wonderful Memories Celebrating An Anniversary

By VSS Entertainment

Honoring any anniversary is really a special moment for the husband and wife to think about  a reaffirmation of vows they took at their wedding and also to generally remember yesteryear. And, since it's a special  milestone, it is truly worthy of a meaningful anniversary and remembrance party for the loving couple. After determining a  party theme, you will want to put special effort into unique, perhaps Pinterest - worthy, party  invites, that incorporate lovely media (either 2-D or 3-D), accessories or graphics along with  treasured words of  tribute.  Continue reading to review a few other tips to help your party  planning be even easier.

Why a Party for an Anniversary?

A tribute celebration for a loving coupe shows just how much you care about them and honors  their many successful years of marriage.  With the ups and downs of modern life, it has become  even more rare for couples to make a loving relationship work.  By reinforcing a celebration of their  long relationship effort, it helps the couple cement an even stronger bond together and within their  family.  As a couple reaches numerically higher anniversary years...like their 20th, 40th, they  provide inspiration to their younger family members.  The anniversary party is also a wonderful way  to have a cross-generational party all together that is fun for everyone and special for the couple.   To pull it off successfully does take some planning, however, especially if it is to be a surprise party.   And as families and friends over the years become more far flung, getting everyone together  usually takes some travel coordination.

Noteworthy Ideas for Anniversary Parties

Among the first choices you will have to make is exactly what type of event you'll want to have.    Formal or beachy?  Casual cookout or sit down dinner?   A formal affair might lend itself to being  more of an occasion to invite adults, peers and work colleagues.  A family anniversary party may be  smaller and more intimate.  Maybe if the couple originally had a small, inexpensive wedding due to  their limited finances when they were younger, it might be time to throw them the occasion they  now deserve.  Once you decide on the type of event, think about what type of venue you will need  to get everyone together.  For a formal event, you may want a ballroom or banquet hall allowing for  seating everyone comfortably and dancing afterword.  For a simpler event, a lovely park or hosting  it in someone's generous backyard may be an option.  But you may wish to rent an event tent just  in case it rains.  Some families do escape weekends where everyone gets together in a  comfortable lodge or boutique hotel and celebrates the anniversary couple with multiple fun  activities, including silly reminiscing events, and lots of feasting, for an entire weekend, usually as  an opportunity for a family reunion.

Once you decide on location and number of guests, think about your invitations.  If you are  hand-making the invitations, estimate carefully the time you might need to put them all together  along with lead time so that people can have time to RSVP back to you and also plan travel  arrangements.  Get other family members to help.  You may even want to put together a funny  video and send it out to everyone via Facebook to encourage people to come if it is to be a less  formal event.

As you choose your anniversary party theme, start thinking about specifics as to whether it will  likely be a home-based barbecue or beach fiesta, or black tie party.  The theme might be selected  based on the particular color of the original wedding or as a symbol of the specific anniversary  milestone number:  a first anniversary is paper, so white for paper or yellow for papyrus.  For the other anniversary years, Hallmark Cards has a helpful gift guide:  {  http://ideas.hallmark.com/anniversary-ideas/anniversary-gifts-by-year/ } and this gemstone site,  Gem Selec, { http://www.gemselect.com/gem-info/birthstones.php } has a list of gems (use this for  party theme color ideas or for presenting jewelry) for each anniversary.  A 9th year anniversary  gem is Lapis Lazuli.  A traditional gift is pottery, a modern gift is leather.  All kinds of ideas  incorporating blues with pottery and leather could really make a special party theme for a 9th anniversary allowing for lots of decor options as a complement.

Having a surprise anniversary party is the ultimate challenge.  Making sure your guests don't tip off  the couple and leak the surprise by having your invitations well-worded and prominent in your conversations with the invited guests will help to not ruin the surprise.  Setting up a simple candlelit dinner date or a romantic cruise for "just the two of them" to revisit their first date is  usually a good tactic which allows for either a simple anniversary for the couple and allows for the other guests to get together to secretly plan the special date.  If possible, everyone can then all  show up later to party with the couple after they have had some time alone to reminisce.

Embellishing Your Invites for the Anniversary Party

Before beginning to spend money on supplies to customize your anniversary invitation cards, you  will want to determine if it's a household party or perhaps a more formal event. For formal parties,  your party invites must have a little more formal wording, somewhat like a formal wedding invitation.  And, for timing, you will need to send your anniversary party invites out 4 to 6 weeks prior to your  scheduled event, whether it's formal or casual. If you're planning an anniversary open-house, think  about having it buffet style where your visitors can appear and disappear at whatever time most  closely fits all of them with a period range detailed inside your anniversary invites, get a bit to eat,  mingle, and hug the happy couple.  Also make sure your invitation wordings indicate the dress  code, especially if it's a color-based theme celebration
